Choosing the right keywords is all about finding a balance between volume, competition, and intent.

Volume is how many people are searching a specific keyword. We want to rank you for keywords which have high volume, because this means the maximum number of people will be seeing your website.

Competition is how difficult it is to rank for a keyword. We want to find keywords with low competition so we can get you on the first page of Google as quickly as possible.

Intent is what the user is actually trying to achieve. We want to rank you for search terms with high intent, meaning keywords associated with users who are likely "ready to buy".

All 3 of these metrics must be balanced carefully to get the best ROI on your SEO investment.

Let's imagine you're a dentist in Toronto and deciding which keywords you want to rank for:

The keyword "dentist Toronto" has very high volume, meaning many thousands of people are searching for this every single month, so it would be great if you show up first, so let's try to rank for this, right? Not so fast! Every dentist in the city is already trying to rank for this keyword, so it's extremely competitive. This means it will take a ton of time and money to get you on the first page for this keyword.

Another example is the keyword "teeth whitening strips Toronto" may have high volume, and may have low competition, but it has poor intent, because people searching this term are likely not even looking for a dentist! So while we may be able to get you on the first page of Google for this keyword, we're not showing your website to potential customers.

A better keyword would be "family dentist Rosedale". This keyword still has a decent volume, but it also has a very low competition, and high intent.
